The UEFA Europa League is back, and this season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. With a fascinating mix of clubs, a high chance of a new champion being crowned, and no clear favourite, fans are in for a thrilling nine-month journey.
This year’s competition stands out because of its unpredictability. Unlike previous seasons where a few giants dominated, the field is wide open. This balance means more intense matches, potential upsets, and a dramatic race to the final in Istanbul.
👑 A New Champion on the Horizon?
This year, we could very well see a new team lift the trophy. Out of all the clubs in the league phase, only Porto has won the Europa League before, and that was 15 years ago. While a few other teams like Roma, Braga, and Rangers have reached the final, the odds are high for a first-time winner. Even Feyenoord, a two-time winner of the old UEFA Cup, is in the mix. But with so many strong contenders who have never won, this season offers a great opportunity for a new name to be written into the history books.
🌍 A Diverse Mix of Clubs
The tournament features 36 teams from 23 different countries, creating a fantastic blend of football styles. We have big names from Europe’s top five leagues, including Roma and Real Betis. There are also historic clubs like Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, who are making their debut in this stage of the competition. Beyond the giants, seasoned European competitors like Rangers, Fenerbahce, and Celtic bring plenty of experience. With so many teams—20 of the 36 have played in this stage at least six times—and five newcomers, the mix of old and new promises some very interesting matchups.
🔮 Too Close to Call
If you’re looking for a clear favourite, you might have a hard time finding one this year. While some statistics point to Aston Villa as a strong contender, the competition is incredibly balanced. In fact, 18 of the 36 teams are seen as having a realistic chance to win. This is very different from other European competitions, where only a handful of teams are considered true title threats. This season, four different clubs are rated with a 10% or better chance of winning, and several others are not far behind. Expect tight games, surprising results, and drama right from the start.
