FC Utrecht Secure Strong Europa League Qualifying Win

FC Utrecht kicked off their UEFA Europa League qualifying campaign with an impressive 3-1 away victory against Sheriff Tiraspol.
FC Utrecht Secure Strong Europa League Qualifying Win

Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht began their UEFA Europa League qualifying journey in style, securing a convincing 3-1 away win against Moldovan champions Sheriff Tiraspol. Despite falling behind early, FC Utrecht showed great resilience to turn the game around with two crucial set-piece goals and a brilliant individual effort, giving them a significant advantage heading into the second leg. The match, played in Nisporeni due to safety concerns in Tiraspol, saw exciting action from both sides.

FC Utrecht’s manager Ron Jans largely kept the same squad from last season, with a notable full debut for Feyenoord loanee Gjivai Zechiel. Sheriff Tiraspol, already five rounds into their Moldovan Super Liga season, started Mauritanian winger Papa Yade ahead of Alesio Mija.

⚽️ Sheriff Takes Early Lead, Utrecht Responds Swiftly

After eliminating Prishtina in the previous round, Sheriff Tiraspol started strongly at home. Papa Yade had an early big chance before Peter Ademo broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a perfectly executed long throw-in. However, FC Utrecht, who qualified for this stage by finishing fourth in the Dutch Eredivisie, didn’t wait long to reply. Less than ten minutes later, Victor Jensen volleyed home a corner kick from Souffian El Karouani, bringing his side level with Sheriff.

✨ Utrecht Takes Control with Key Set-Piece Goals

Sheriff had the upper hand for much of the first half, but the momentum shifted after the break. FC Utrecht captain Nick Viergever gave his team the lead in the 54th minute, volleying another El Karouani corner into the top corner of the net. Sheriff sought an equalizer, and Papa Yade earned himself a golden opportunity in the 68th minute but unfortunately missed an open goal, failing to bring the score to 2-2.

🌟 Blake Seals Victory, Youngster Makes Debut

Instead of an equalizer, FC Utrecht extended their lead. Adrian Blake, an Englishman, made a superb solo run and fired the ball into the far corner of Ivan Dyulgerov’s goal, putting Utrecht up 3-1. The night became even more memorable when 16-year-old Jaygo van Ommeren (born in 2008) replaced midfielder Alonzo Engwanda in the 80th minute, making his official debut for FC Utrecht. Earlier, Van Ommeren had only played a few minutes for Jong FC Utrecht in the Dutch second division. The Man of the Match award went to FC Utrecht’s Mike van der Hoorn for his solid performance.

📈 What This Means for the Return Leg

Sheriff Tiraspol struggled to offer much in the final 20 minutes, and now faces a significant challenge. To keep their European campaign alive, they will need to overturn a two-goal deficit in the return leg. The crucial second match is scheduled for Thursday, July 31st, at FC Utrecht’s home ground, Stadion Galgenwaard. FC Utrecht holds a strong advantage, but Sheriff will undoubtedly be fighting hard for a comeback.
