Malmo FF celebrated their win in the Champions League qualifiers, setting up a much-anticipated match against their Scandinavian rivals, FC Copenhagen. However, the celebration took a controversial turn when Danish player Jens Stryger Larsen joined fans in a chant against their upcoming opponents.
This incident has raised concerns with Danish authorities, who now consider the upcoming match a “high-risk” event due to the intense rivalry between the two clubs.
🗣️ A Controversial Celebration
After Malmo secured their spot in the third qualifying round, excitement was high. During the post-match celebrations, several players, including Danish international Jens Stryger Larsen, were seen singing “We hate Copenhagen” along with the fans. This chant was directed at their next opponents, the Danish champions FC Copenhagen.
😟 Police Express Concern
The involvement of a well-known Danish player in the chant has drawn comments from the Copenhagen Police. Senior police inspector Peter Dahl noted that such actions contribute to an unfriendly atmosphere. He said it was a “shame” that influential figures would help “stir up a hostile atmosphere” rather than working to ease tensions. He added that the rivalry between Malmo and Copenhagen is almost as intense as the one between Copenhagen and Brondby.
🛡️ Heightened Security Measures
In response to the growing tensions, the police are taking extra precautions. The match has been officially classified as “high-risk,” and there will be a significant police presence. Stricter rules will be enforced around the stadium, and visiting Swedish fans may be asked to remain in their seats for up to an hour after the match ends to ensure safety for everyone. The first leg will be in Malmö on August 5, with the return match in Copenhagen a week later.
