Veteran German defender Mats Hummels has spoken out about the increasingly heavy workload faced by top football players. With more competitions and matches being added to the calendar, there is a growing concern that players are being pushed to their limits, a sentiment shared by many influential figures in the sport.
📅 A Packed Schedule
The football calendar is becoming more crowded than ever. New formats, like the expanded Champions League and a revamped Club World Cup, mean that elite players are facing a non-stop cycle of games. Some are expected to play over 55 matches in a single season, a number that many believe is not sustainable in the long run and puts players’ health at risk.
😟 Hummels’ Warning
The former Dortmund and Bayern Munich star shared his worries, stating that the demands on players have reached their maximum. “This continues to be an issue that needs to be addressed in football. You can’t completely overburden the players,” Hummels explained. He expressed fears that this intense strain could lead to top players getting worn out and missing important games due to injury in the coming years.
🗣️ A Shared Concern
Hummels is not alone in his view. The world players’ union, FIFPRO, has previously criticized football’s governing bodies for not considering the well-being of players. Prominent coaches like Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have also voiced similar concerns. Even top players, such as Kevin de Bruyne, agree that the demanding schedule needs a solution. If nothing changes, the sport could see more injuries, and the overall quality of matches may decline as a result.
