Barcelona coach Hansi Flick and his assistant will miss their first Champions League match due to misconduct, alongside player fines.
Hansi Flick Banned for Champions League Opener

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is set to miss a crucial opening match in the upcoming UEFA Champions League season. This decision comes after a challenging semi-final loss to Inter in May, where frustrations ran high. The European football governing body has taken action, impacting the club’s start to their European campaign.

⚽ Manager and Assistant Receive Sanctions

Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, along with his assistant Marcus Sorg, have each been fined 20,000 euros and handed a one-match ban from UEFA club competitions. This disciplinary action was taken due to misconduct following their team’s narrow 4-3 aggregate loss to Inter in the Champions League semi-finals. During that intense match, Flick had expressed strong disapproval of several refereeing decisions, which ultimately prevented Barcelona from reaching their first Champions League final in ten years.

🚫 Immediate Impact on New Season

These sanctions are effective immediately, meaning both Hansi Flick and Marcus Sorg will be unable to be in the dugout for Barcelona’s first match of the new Champions League season. Their absence could pose a challenge as the team begins its journey in Europe’s top club competition without their main leadership on the touchline.

⚖️ Players Also Face Fines

In a separate ruling, Barcelona forwards Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski have each been fined 5,000 euros. This was for not following instructions from an anti-doping officer and not reporting immediately to a control post during the same Champions League semi-final game. This highlights the importance of adhering to all regulations, even amidst high-pressure matches.

🏟️ Club Fines for Fan Behaviour

The disciplinary committee also imposed fines on both clubs for incidents involving their supporters. Barcelona was fined 5,250 euros because fans threw objects, and an additional 2,500 euros for lighting fireworks. Inter, on their part, received a 22,000 euro fine for their supporters blocking public passageways and another 11,500 euros for lighting fireworks during the match. These fines underline UEFA’s commitment to ensuring a safe and orderly environment for all matches.
