Barcelona has received a boost ahead of their Champions League opener against Newcastle United. Coach Hansi Flick, who was facing a one-match sideline ban, will now be allowed to lead his team from the dugout on Thursday after a successful appeal.
🤔 The Reason for the Ban
The issue dates back to last season’s exciting Champions League semi-final. Flick and his assistant, Marcus Sorg, were given one-match bans by UEFA for their animated reactions during the second-leg match against Inter Milan. Barcelona was unfortunately knocked out in that game after a dramatic 4-3 defeat in extra time, and Flick was very unhappy with some of the referee’s decisions.
✅ Appeal Successful
Barcelona appealed the decision, and UEFA has now partially agreed with them. While the ban isn’t completely cancelled, it has been suspended for a one-year “probationary period.” This means that as long as there are no further issues in the next 12 months, the ban will not be enforced. This allows both Flick and Sorg to be present for the important match against Newcastle.
⚽️ Looking Ahead to the Match
Having their head coach on the sideline is great news for Barcelona as they begin their European journey. Flick’s presence will surely provide leadership and guidance for the team in what is expected to be a challenging opening game. The club can now fully focus on preparing for their trip to face Newcastle.
