Expert Questions Flick's Defensive System at Barcelona

After a thrilling 3-3 draw against Club Brugge in the Champions League, questions have been raised about Barcelona’s defensive stability under new coach Hansi Flick. Former Sevilla defender Julien Escude shared his analysis, expressing concern over the team’s performance at the back.

Escude pointed out that the Barcelona players seem to be struggling with the new system. He believes there’s a clear lack of coordination and understanding, which was evident in their recent match.

🤔 Defensive Confusion on Display?

Julien Escude observed that Barcelona’s defenders appeared “confused” and unsure of their roles during the game. He suggested that the team is paying the price for a “lack of defensive understanding,” particularly when trying to win the ball back (pressing) and when shifting from attack to defence. This uncertainty is causing problems for the entire team.

🧩 A Lack of Team Coordination

According to Escude, many of the defensive mistakes seem to be based on individual decisions rather than a coordinated team effort. He feels the players are not yet on the same page under Hansi Flick’s tactical instructions. This disconnect makes them vulnerable, especially against quick counter-attacks.

😥 Players Looking Uncomfortable

Beyond tactics, Escude highlighted the players’ body language. “I see the players looking uncomfortable, and when a player is uncomfortable, it shows,” he said. He suggested that bringing back experienced players like Íñigo Martínez could provide the stability and leadership the team currently needs to feel more confident on the pitch.
