Arsenal will hold a special tribute for former academy player Billy Vigar during their Champions League match against Olympiacos on Wednesday. The tribute follows the sad news of Vigar’s passing last week after a serious on-field accident.
This gesture shows the club’s support for Vigar’s family and honours his time with the team, where he was part of the under-21s squad until last year. Manager Mikel Arteta and the players have already shown their respect, and this public tribute will allow fans to join in remembering him.
🙏 A Planned Tribute
Before the match against Olympiacos, a photo of Billy Vigar will be displayed on the stadium’s large screens. An announcement will also be made to honour his memory. This tribute is a way for the club and its supporters to pay their respects to a player who grew up in their youth system.
🕊️ A Sad Loss for Football
Vigar, who was playing for Chichester City, suffered a serious head injury during a match against Wingate & Finchley. He accidentally collided with a concrete wall near the pitch and was taken to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, which included being placed in an induced coma, he sadly passed away last Thursday.
💬 The Club’s Response
The news deeply affected the Arsenal community. In their recent match against Newcastle, the players wore black armbands as a sign of respect. Manager Mikel Arteta described the news as “shocking” and expressed his full support for Vigar’s family and loved ones, hoping that lessons could be learned to prevent similar incidents in the future.
