In 2023, a difficult match for Ghana’s U23 team could have defined Terry Yegbe’s career. After a 5-1 loss to Morocco where his mistake led to a goal, the young defender faced intense criticism online. This challenging moment, however, did not break him. Instead, it became a turning point in a journey that has now led him to France’s Ligue 1, where he is proving his potential with FC Metz and showing great resilience.
🌱 Early Career and Challenges
Yegbe’s journey began at the well-known WAFA Academy in Ghana before he moved to a lower-tier club, Vision FC. The transition was not easy, as he struggled with adapting to a new environment and even a new language. His talent soon caught the eye of European clubs, but his first big opportunity came with a setback when his visa for a move to Danish club Midtjylland was denied twice. This left him feeling discouraged, but with encouragement from his club’s president, he kept working hard. His persistence paid off when he secured a move to Finnish side SJK, where he had to adapt to freezing temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees Celsius. After proving himself in Finland, he moved to Swedish club IF Elfsborg, continuing his steady climb in European football.
🌪️ A Tough Lesson in the Spotlight
The match at the U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco was a major test of Yegbe’s mental strength. The heavy defeat and the personal criticism that followed on social media were overwhelming. “It was really bad for me,” he shared. “I started to question myself - maybe I’m not good enough.” To cope, he chose to stay away from social media and focus on himself. Yegbe now sees the experience as a lesson on the pressures of being a professional athlete. He learned that public opinion will always be divided, and the best response is to remain focused and work on coming back stronger.
🇫🇷 A New Chapter with FC Metz
In the summer of 2025, Yegbe’s career took a significant step forward when he joined FC Metz in Ligue 1. The move happened quickly after a call from his agent and some positive advice from his friend, Augustine Boakye, who described Metz as a great place for player development. Since joining, Yegbe has already shown his versatility by playing both as a left-back and in his preferred position of left centre-back. He is enjoying his time in France, especially the incredible atmosphere created by the fans during home games.
✨ National Recognition and Future Goals
Yegbe’s hard work and consistent performances were rewarded in November 2024 when he received his first call-up to Ghana’s senior national team. The call from coach Otto Addo was a sudden but incredibly proud moment for him and his family. For a player who had faced so much public doubt, this recognition was especially meaningful. Guided by his faith and a humble attitude, Yegbe continues to improve his game, studying players like his role model, David Alaba. Looking ahead, his goals are clear: to help Metz succeed in Ligue 1 and to become a regular member of the national team, with his eyes on a possible World Cup spot.
