Sporting Legend Balakov on Gyokeres, Amorim, and Club Futures

Krasimir Balakov, a legend for Sporting CP and a key player in Bulgaria’s famous 1994 World Cup team, recently shared his thoughts on some of football’s biggest talking points. In an exclusive interview, Balakov discussed Viktor Gyokeres’ high-profile transfer to Arsenal, Ruben Amorim’s challenging start at Manchester United, and the future direction of his beloved Sporting CP. His insights offer a grounded perspective on player impact, coaching pressures, and club strategies in modern football.

⚽ Gyokeres’ Big Move to Arsenal

Balakov touched on the long transfer saga surrounding Viktor Gyokeres, noting that clarity is always better for clubs and players. He acknowledged Gyokeres’ success in the Portuguese league and his ability to perform against strong opponents, but emphasized that the real test now begins at Arsenal. While many see Gyokeres as the missing piece for Arsenal to finally win the Premier League title, Balakov believes it’s not just about one player. He highlighted the brutal competition in the Premier League, where consistency is key. However, he did agree that Gyokeres, as a powerful number 9, offers Arsenal a new type of attacking option, allowing for a more direct style of play and more crosses, adding variety to their previously fluid, combination-based game.

🔴 Amorim’s Tough Task at United

Regarding Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United, Balakov expressed tremendous respect for him as a coach, praising his modern understanding of football. He acknowledged that Amorim took charge during an extremely difficult period, tasked with rebuilding the team. Balakov suggested that some criticisms towards Amorim might be excessive, especially considering the squad’s potential compared to other top clubs. However, he also pointed out that expectations at Manchester United are always sky-high, something Amorim knew when he signed. Balakov hopes Amorim can overcome the challenges, utilize new arrivals like Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha effectively, and avoid a repeat of the previous difficult season, showcasing his strong coaching qualities.

🦁 Sporting CP’s Path Forward

Balakov praised Sporting CP’s recent success in breaking the long-standing dominance of Porto and Benfica in Portugal, attributing it mainly to club president Frederico Varandas and his choice to appoint Ruben Amorim. This decision, he said, raised ambitions and the club’s overall level. Looking ahead, Balakov stressed that maintaining this consistency and following the club’s ideas are crucial after Gyokeres’ departure. He highlighted Sporting’s strong academy, which consistently produces excellent homegrown players, as a key asset. Balakov also realistically discussed the financial gap between clubs like Sporting (and his former club Stuttgart) and Europe’s giants, acknowledging that competing consistently at the highest European level is a huge challenge. He noted that while it’s hard to keep top talents like Gyokeres for long, playing in the Champions League and winning domestic titles ensures fan happiness.

💭 Reflections on Football and Giving Back

Balakov also shared insights from his playing days, reflecting on the profound influence of legendary coaches like Sir Bobby Robson and Carlos Queiroz. He described Robson as a unique person and Queiroz as an innovator who introduced many modern methodologies to football years ago. He highlighted both Robson and Felix Magath as coaches he particularly admired for their fair assessments and treatment, despite demanding hard work. Finally, Balakov expressed his honor and privilege to participate in an upcoming international charity match in Portugal alongside football legends like Luis Figo, Ronaldinho, and Deco. He emphasized that the most important aspect of the event is helping people in difficult social situations and those affected by wars, especially in Ukraine.
