Belgium coach Rudi Garcia has shared his happiness with Kevin de Bruyne’s decision to join Napoli. After leaving Manchester City, the star midfielder had offers from the US and Saudi Arabia but chose to move to Italy instead. Garcia believes this was the right call for both his career and the Belgian national team.
✅ A Smart Career Choice
Garcia explained that moving to Napoli keeps De Bruyne at the highest level of European football. “In Naples, you’re in Europe, you’re champions of Italy, and you’re playing in the Champions League,” he noted. He pointed out that while moves to leagues in the US or Saudi Arabia have their benefits, they also come with challenges like long travel distances, time differences, and a different level of competition. By staying in Europe, De Bruyne can continue to compete against the world’s best.
🏆 A Legendary Talent
Even at 34, Garcia has immense respect for De Bruyne’s abilities. He acknowledged that the midfielder might not be able to play a full 90 minutes in every single match, but praised him as “a champion, one of the best players I’ve coached.” To highlight his point, Garcia mentioned other football legends he has worked with, such as Totti, Ronaldo, and Hazard, placing De Bruyne in the same elite group.
🧤 Goalkeeper Situation
When asked about Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar potentially playing for Belgium, Garcia was less certain. He acknowledged Svilar’s talent but mentioned a complication from a past match where he briefly played for Serbia. Garcia also added that Belgium is already well-equipped in that position, saying, “I’m well covered with the best of them all, (Thibaut) Courtois,” suggesting a call-up for Svilar is unlikely for now.
