Turkish club Galatasaray recently had the chance to sign veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer from Inter Milan. However, they decided to go in a different direction, a choice that affects both Sommer’s and Inter’s future plans.
The main reasons for the deal not happening were Sommer’s age and his contract situation. Galatasaray preferred to make a long-term investment, while Inter Milan now needs to plan for a new number one goalkeeper for the next season.
🤔 A Transfer Opportunity Arises
Inter Milan were reportedly open to selling Yann Sommer, with an asking price of around €7 million. As the Swiss goalkeeper is in the final year of his contract, it was a chance for Inter to receive a fee for him before he could leave for free. Galatasaray considered the offer but had some reservations about the move.
⚽ Galatasaray Chooses a Different Path
Ultimately, Galatasaray decided against signing Sommer, mainly due to his age. The club chose to invest in a younger talent instead, signing Ugurcan Cakir from Trabzonspor for a much larger fee of €27 million. This move shows their focus on building for the long term.
➡️ What’s Next for Sommer and Inter?
With the move to Galatasaray off the table, Yann Sommer is expected to stay at Inter for the remainder of his contract. He will likely leave the club as a free agent next summer. In the meantime, Inter will use the upcoming season to search for and sign a new, younger goalkeeper to be their long-term number one.
