Conte Explains Napoli's Smart Transfer Approach

Napoli's coach Antonio Conte discusses the club's focus on rebuilding the squad with multiple players rather than chasing expensive superstars.
Conte Explains Napoli's Smart Transfer Approach

Following a recent win against Pisa, Napoli coach Antonio Conte shared his thoughts on the team’s summer transfer activities. He clarified that while the club brought in many new faces, the focus was on practical squad building rather than making a few expensive “major” signings.

Conte’s main point was that the team’s strategy was driven by necessity. Instead of chasing high-profile stars, the goal was to create a full, competitive squad. He believes this approach was the most sensible way to prepare the team for the upcoming season.

🤔 What Makes a “Major” Signing?

According to Conte, a truly “major” signing is a player who costs between €50 to €70 million. He explained that Napoli’s recent transfers were not in this category because the club had a different objective. “Major players are different,” he stated, highlighting that the club’s spending was spread across multiple players to address various needs.

🏗️ Rebuilding the Team from Scratch

Conte stressed that the club needed to bring in many players simply because the squad was very thin. “We did it because we had to fill a squad that practically didn’t exist,” he said. He pointed out that signing nine new players is like building half a team, which naturally comes with its own set of challenges but was an essential step for Napoli.

💡 Smart Spending Over Big Splurges

The coach broke down the numbers, noting that spending €150 million on nine players averages out to about €15-20 million per player. This, he argued, is a very different strategy from spending a huge sum on one or two star players. For Conte, Napoli’s approach was about being creative and efficient in the transfer market to build a solid foundation for the future.
