Former Celtic player Charlie Mulgrew recently suggested that Aston Villa’s captain, John McGinn, likely holds a personal dream of one day playing for Celtic. Mulgrew, who knows McGinn personally, explained that this ambition is rooted in McGinn’s family background and his upbringing in Glasgow, where Celtic and Rangers are dominant football clubs.
👨👩👧👦 A Deep-Rooted Connection
Mulgrew pointed out that John McGinn’s desire to join Celtic would be a natural one, given his background. “Listen, John McGinn would’ve loved to have went to Celtic,” Mulgrew said. “I know John McGinn personally, his whole family are Celtic fans.” He believes that while the move didn’t happen in the past for various reasons, the idea of playing for his family’s favourite club is probably still on McGinn’s mind.
⚽ The Glasgow Dream
For many young footballers growing up in Glasgow, playing for either Celtic or Rangers is seen as the highest achievement. Mulgrew explained this unique local perspective: “When you’re brought up in Glasgow, the only teams that you see are Celtic and Rangers – and for you, that’s the pinnacle of football.” This environment shapes the dreams of aspiring players from a young age, making a move to one of these clubs incredibly meaningful.
🥅 A Personal Perspective
Drawing from his own experience, Mulgrew shared how he could relate to McGinn’s potential feelings. “I’d picture myself growing up in the streets of Glasgow, picturing myself scoring against Rangers, that was my dream. That was the top of the world of football for me.” He feels that McGinn would be eager to experience a similar moment. However, Mulgrew also noted that whether this dream move will ever happen remains uncertain.
