Despite fan concerns, UEFA has given the green light for two major European league matches to be played in the United States and Australia.
UEFA Approves Overseas Games for LaLiga and Serie A

In a significant move, two major European football matches are set to be played abroad. Spain’s LaLiga will see Barcelona face Villarreal in Miami, Florida, while Italy’s Serie A will feature a game between AC Milan and Como in Perth, Australia. The decision, approved by UEFA, has sparked considerable discussion among football fans and organizations.

This development marks a rare occasion where domestic league games are held outside their home countries. While the leagues see it as a chance to expand their global reach, the move has been met with mixed reactions. European football’s governing body, UEFA, expressed its hesitation but ultimately allowed the games to proceed, citing a lack of clear rules from FIFA to block them.

🤔 A Reluctant Approval

UEFA has made it clear that it does not support the idea of domestic league games being played in other countries. In a statement, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin described the approval as a one-time exception, saying, “While it is regrettable to have to let these two games go ahead, this decision is exceptional and shall not be seen as setting a precedent.” The organization stated that despite widespread opposition, it found no specific regulations in FIFA’s statutes that would allow it to prevent the matches from happening.

✈️ Why the Move Abroad?

Each league has its own reasons for moving a match overseas. LaLiga has arranged for the game between champions Barcelona and Villarreal to be played in Miami in late December as part of its strategy to grow its audience in North America. Meanwhile, Serie A’s decision to move the AC Milan vs. Como match to Perth on February 8th was more practical. It was done to avoid a scheduling conflict with the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, which will take place at Milan’s San Siro stadium.

🗣️ Fans Voice Their Concerns

The decision has not been popular with everyone, especially European supporter groups. They have strongly protested the moves, calling them “absurd, unaffordable, and environmentally irresponsible.” Fans are concerned that holding games so far from home makes it difficult and expensive for local supporters to attend, and they question the impact of such long-distance travel on the environment and the players.
