RCD Mallorca has stripped Dani Rodriguez of his captaincy following a series of public complaints he made on social media. The midfielder’s outburst came after he was left on the bench during the team’s recent match against Real Madrid.
This incident highlights the tension that can arise when a player’s personal disappointment clashes with the club’s code of conduct. The club’s swift response shows its commitment to upholding the authority of the coach and maintaining team unity.
📱 What Happened on Social Media?
Following the game at the Bernabeu, Rodriguez took to Instagram to express his frustration. He posted photos of his family in the stands, explaining that his children had come hoping to see him play. In his message, he hinted at a lack of “meritocracy” and “respect for work” within the team, clearly unhappy with the coach’s decision to not play him.
😠 The Player’s Follow-Up Comments
Instead of retracting his comments, Rodriguez later intensified his criticism. He openly questioned the decisions of coach Jagoba Arrasate and expressed disappointment that a younger midfielder, Jan Virgili, was chosen to play instead. The now-former captain worried about the message this sent to the rest of the team, suggesting that “hard work, dedication, or loyalty” might not matter.
🛡️ The Club’s Firm Response
Mallorca’s management acted quickly and decisively. Sporting director Pablo Ortells publicly backed the coach and stated that the club’s interests must always come first. As a result, Rodriguez was suspended from team activities, did not participate in the next training session, and was officially removed from his role as team captain.
