Spanish police have arrested a Real Oviedo fan for making racist gestures towards Real Madrid players during a match between the two teams last month. This incident is the latest in a series of events that highlights the ongoing efforts to address racism in Spanish football.
⚖️ Fan Arrested After LaLiga Match
The arrest was confirmed by Spain’s National Police following a report from LaLiga. The incident happened on August 24th, during the 37th minute of the game, as Real Madrid players were celebrating a goal scored by Kylian Mbappe. The fan was seen making offensive gestures and sounds directed at the players, which were caught on camera.
📸 How the Supporter Was Identified
LaLiga officials first reported the racist behavior after it was captured by television broadcasts. Spanish authorities then analyzed images and video footage from the match to identify the individual involved. This collaboration between the league and the police was crucial in locating and arresting the supporter.
⚽ A Wider Crackdown on Racism in Spanish Football
This arrest is part of a growing trend of stricter consequences for racist behavior in Spanish football. Recently, a man received a one-year prison sentence for racially abusing Athletic Bilbao player Inaki Williams in 2020. In another case, three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for hate crimes against Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. last year. It is important to note that in Spain, prison sentences under two years for non-violent offenses often do not require jail time for individuals with no prior criminal record.
