Atletico Madrid was held to a 1-1 draw by Alaves, extending their winless start to the LaLiga season. The match saw an early goal from Atletico’s Giuliano Simeone, which was quickly cancelled out by a penalty from Carlos Vicente. Despite a strong second-half effort, Atletico could not find a winning goal against a well-organised Alaves side.
This result means it is the first time under coach Diego Simeone that Atletico has failed to win any of their first three league matches. In contrast, Alaves continues to be a tough team to beat at home, remaining undefeated in their last six games at their Mendizorroza stadium.
⚽ A Quick Start and a Sudden Setback
Atletico Madrid got off to a great start when Giuliano Simeone, a former Alaves loanee, scored in the seventh minute. He showed great determination to win the ball in a crowded penalty area before firing it past the goalkeeper. However, their lead did not last long. Alaves was awarded a penalty after Alexander Sorloth fouled Nahuel Tenaglia, and Carlos Vicente calmly scored from the spot to make it 1-1.
🤔 Struggles in the First Half
After the equaliser, Atletico seemed to lose their rhythm. They looked shaky in defence and found it difficult to create clear chances for their strikers, Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez. The home team, Alaves, managed the game well, keeping the contest tight and frustrating their opponents. The first half ended with both teams level, which suited Alaves’ game plan perfectly.
💥 Griezmann Inspires Second-Half Push
In the second half, Atletico pushed hard for a winner. The introduction of Antoine Griezmann from the bench gave them a much-needed spark. The French forward was lively, creating a great chance for Sorloth whose header was saved well. Griezmann then came very close to scoring himself when his corner kick hit the post. He continued to deliver dangerous balls into the box, keeping the Alaves defence on high alert.
📈 A Frustrating End for Atletico
Despite a long period of stoppage time, Atletico could not break down the disciplined Alaves defence. The home team worked hard to close down space and successfully held on for a valuable point. For Atletico, it was a frustrating trip, as they left without the victory they desperately needed. This slow start to the season is their worst since the 2009/10 campaign.
