As Union SG defender Kevin Mac Allister prepares for a big Champions League night against Inter, he is also getting ready to face an old teammate from his youth days, Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain Lautaro Martinez.
At 27, Mac Allister has become a key player for his Belgian club. While his younger brother, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, often grabs the headlines, Kevin is busy building his own successful career. He shared his thoughts on the tough match ahead, his football family, and the dreams that keep him going.
✨ A Dream Start in Europe
Kevin was happy when the Champions League draw was announced, even though he knew the matches would be difficult. His European adventure started perfectly with a 3-1 win over PSV, where he even scored a goal. “It was like a dream,” he recalled. “To win our first Champions League game and for me to score was incredible.” The moment was made even more special because his wife, who is expecting their first child, was in the stadium to see it.
⚔️ The Inter Milan Challenge
The joy was followed by a tough 4-0 loss to Newcastle, but Kevin sees it as a learning experience. Now, his focus is on Inter, a team he considers one of the top five in Europe. He has a lot of respect for their captain, Lautaro Martinez, whom he has known since they were young. “He’s unpredictable and too intelligent,” Kevin said, explaining that there is no single way to defend against him. “On the pitch, there are no friends, only respect. That means you never back down from a challenge.”
❤️ A Special Family Bond
Family is clearly important to Kevin. He spoke fondly of his brother Alexis and their great relationship. One of his favorite career moments was when Union played against Liverpool in the Europa League last year. He waited for Alexis on the Anfield pitch before the game, and they shared a quiet moment together. “Playing with or against your brother is something you never forget,” he said. He also dreams of one day playing for the Argentina national team alongside his brother and friends like Lautaro.
🇮🇹 Inspired by Italian Legends
Growing up, Kevin was inspired by Italian football, particularly defenders like Fabio Cannavaro from the 2006 World Cup-winning team. He also shared a memorable experience with another Italian star, Daniele De Rossi, during his short time at Boca Juniors. Kevin was impressed by how humble and intelligent De Rossi was, both on and off the pitch. As he continues his journey, Kevin hopes football will one day take him to Naples, a city that holds a special place in the hearts of many Argentinians.
