Andre Onana’s first match for Trabzonspor was an eventful one. After joining the Turkish club on loan from Manchester United, he made an error during his debut game against Fenerbahce but recovered brilliantly to be named ‘man of the match’.
This move is seen as a positive one by his national team’s goalkeeping coach, Carlos Kameni, who believes it is the right step for Onana to regain his confidence and form away from the intense spotlight of the Premier League.
🤔 A Fresh Start in Turkey
Carlos Kameni fully supports Onana’s move, noting that the goalkeeper was going through a tough time at Manchester United. After facing significant criticism last season and getting very little playing time this season, Kameni and Onana agreed that a change was necessary for his career. “Andre was struggling at Manchester United,” Kameni said, highlighting the need for a new environment.
🥅 More Game Time, Less Pressure
Kameni believes that it is better to be a starting player at a good club than a substitute at a top-tier one. “I told him he was right. It’s a good choice,” Kameni stated. He feels that playing for Trabzonspor in the Turkish league will allow Onana to be a key player again. While he will still be watched closely, the pressure will likely be less intense than what he experienced in England.
💪 A Stepping Stone for a Big Comeback
Kameni is confident that this loan move can serve as a launchpad for Onana to return to a major European club. He emphasised that Onana has not lost his goalkeeping abilities; he simply went through a difficult phase, which can happen to any professional athlete. “If he has a good season in Turkey, he’ll be in demand next summer,” Kameni concluded, expressing his belief in Onana’s potential to bounce back.
