Tyler Morton, who spent 17 years at Liverpool after joining the academy at age seven, has shared his thoughts on his recent £15 million move to French club Lyon. The move came after a discussion with new manager Arne Slot about his future at the club.
Morton’s departure highlights the changes happening at Liverpool under a new manager. While he remains grateful for his time at the club, especially under Jurgen Klopp, he felt a move was necessary to get more playing time and continue his development.
🙏 A Special Bond with Jurgen Klopp
Morton spoke very highly of former manager Jurgen Klopp, calling him “the best coach for my development.” He explained that Klopp gave him the chance to play at the highest level, showing great faith in his abilities. “He gave me the opportunity to play on the biggest stage for a very big club. He believed in me,” Morton recalled, adding that Klopp supported his decision to go on loan to gain experience.
🤝 An Honest Conversation with Arne Slot
Morton’s situation changed with the arrival of new manager Arne Slot. He felt he wasn’t going to get the playing time he wanted, especially with the club’s new signings. Morton appreciated Slot’s honesty, saying, “He was very open and very honest with me… We talked a lot, and he let me join OL (Lyon).” He respected the manager’s decision and felt it was time to “find another path.”
⚽ Looking Ahead to a New Challenge
Despite leaving his childhood club, Morton views the move to Lyon as the “best decision” for his career. He expressed his gratitude to both managers for their roles in his journey. His departure is part of a wider squad refresh under Slot, which also saw fellow academy graduate Jarrell Quansah move to Bayer Leverkusen. For Morton, this new chapter in France is a chance to build on his recent success, which includes winning the European Championship with England’s U21 team.
