Liverpool are reportedly setting their sights on Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano to strengthen their backline. The club’s interest has grown following a serious knee injury to Giovanni Leoni, which has unfortunately ruled him out for the rest of the season.
🎯 A New Defensive Target
With the need for a reliable central defender, Liverpool have identified Upamecano as a strong candidate. He is considered an alternative to another target, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. As both players’ contracts are set to expire in June, the upcoming transfer windows could be very busy for the Reds.
✍️ The Contract Advantage
What makes Upamecano a particularly interesting option is his contract situation. Because he plays for a club outside of England, Liverpool can legally approach him to sign a pre-contract agreement starting from January 1. This would allow him to join the club for free next summer. This option is not available for Guehi, as rules prevent pre-contracts between clubs in the same country.
⚔️ Facing Competition and Urgency
However, Liverpool are not the only top club interested in the French defender. Real Madrid are also keeping a close watch on his situation. Due to their urgent need for defensive cover, Liverpool might decide to make a transfer offer in January to convince Bayern to sell him early, rather than waiting until his contract runs out.
