Arsenal and Palace Seek Fixture Change Amid Cup Clash

Arsenal and Crystal Palace have asked the Premier League to reschedule their upcoming matches to help their players manage a packed festive season.
Arsenal and Palace Seek Fixture Change Amid Cup Clash

Football clubs Arsenal and Crystal Palace are facing a significant scheduling challenge this festive season following the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw. Both teams are now set to play their Cup match just two days after their respective crucial Premier League games. This tight schedule has prompted both clubs to request adjustments from the Premier League, aiming to protect their players from excessive fatigue and potential injuries.

🗓️ Festive Season Fixture Congestion

The issue arose after the Carabao Cup draw, which placed Arsenal and Crystal Palace in a quarter-final clash during an already packed December schedule. Arsenal is scheduled to play Everton in the Premier League on Sunday, December 21. On the very same day, Crystal Palace will face Leeds. The Carabao Cup match between Arsenal and Crystal Palace is then set to take place just two days after these league fixtures, leaving very little rest time for the players involved.

🗣️ Managers Express Strong Concerns

Both managers have openly voiced their worries about this fixture pile-up. Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, and Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace’s manager, believe the current arrangement is problematic for player welfare. Glasner described the situation as “irresponsible” towards the players, stressing that clubs have a duty to look after their physical well-being. He also shared his surprise and frustration upon first hearing about the proposed schedule.

🙏 Clubs Seeking Premier League Intervention

To address these concerns, both clubs are actively working to move their Premier League matches forward. Crystal Palace is hoping to shift their game against Leeds to Saturday, December 20, which would create a slightly longer gap before the Carabao Cup tie. Similarly, Arteta is optimistic that the Premier League will adjust Arsenal’s fixture, stating that playing a demanding match just two days after another significant game “doesn’t make any sense” from a player’s perspective. The clubs are now awaiting a decision from the Premier League regarding their requests.
