In the first Hamburg derby in Germany’s top football league in over 14 years, St. Pauli defeated local rivals Hamburger SV 2-0. The match, held at a lively Volksparkstadion, was Hamburg’s first Bundesliga home game since their return to the top division in 2018. St. Pauli delivered a strong performance, scoring in both halves to secure the important win.
The victory showcased St. Pauli’s excellent form, carrying momentum from their previous match. Despite a passionate home crowd supporting Hamburger SV, the visitors remained composed and executed their game plan effectively. Hamburg fought hard but struggled to break down St. Pauli’s defense and were ultimately reduced to ten men, making their comeback attempt even more difficult.
⚽ Early Goal Sets the Tone
St. Pauli started the match strongly and surprised the home fans by scoring within the first 20 minutes. Following a corner, Mathias Pereira Lage delivered a low cross into the box, and Adam Dźwigała was quick to react, guiding the ball past the goalkeeper at the near post to give his team a 1-0 lead. The visitors nearly doubled their lead later in the half, but a shot from Pereira Lage went just wide.
🥅 Hamburg’s Efforts Fall Short
After half-time, Hamburger SV came out with more energy, hoping to find an equalizer. They appeared to have scored just two minutes after the restart, but the goal from Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer was disallowed by VAR for offside. Hamburg continued to press forward, and a powerful free-kick from Miro Muheim forced a good save from the St. Pauli goalkeeper, but they couldn’t find a way to score.
🏆 St. Pauli Secures the Win
While Hamburg was focused on attacking, St. Pauli caught them on a counter-attack just before the 60-minute mark. Joel Fujita, who was named Man of the Match, made a clever pass to Andréas Hountondji, who went around the goalkeeper and scored from a difficult angle to make it 2-0. Hamburg’s frustrations grew, and Giorgi Gocholeishvili was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a strong tackle, ending any real hope of a comeback.
