Rummenigge: Premier League Spending Threatens German Football

Bayern Munich board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has shared his concerns about the growing financial power of the English Premier League, suggesting it could create problems for Germany’s Bundesliga. He pointed out the continuous rise in player wages and transfer fees, calling for a more sustainable approach to football’s finances.

💰 A Growing Financial Gap

Rummenigge highlighted that the main issue stems from the source of money in English football. “In England, clubs are owned by multi-billionaires or even states, like Saudi Arabia and Qatar,” he explained. This massive financial backing makes it difficult for German clubs to compete, not only for players but also in major tournaments like the Champions League.

⚖️ A Call for Fairer Rules

To address this imbalance, the former striker suggested new financial regulations. He proposed that the “spending cap,” which limits how much of a club’s revenue can be spent on wages and transfers, should be lowered from 70% to 60%, or even 55%. Rummenigge stressed that football should not be an industry where clubs are constantly losing money.

🤝 Working Together for a Sustainable Future

Rummenigge believes that a solution requires everyone in the football world—clubs, players, and agents—to come together for a serious discussion. “We can’t continue with the ‘always more’ mentality,” he said. He warned that simply expanding the match calendar or creating new competitions is not a long-term solution for the financial challenges facing the sport.
