Kompany Reveals Why He Left HSV in 2008

Bayern Munich's coach looks back on a key moment from his playing days at HSV that prompted his move to Manchester City.
Kompany Reveals Why He Left HSV in 2008

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany recently shared the story behind his departure from his former club, Hamburger SV (HSV), back in 2008. As he prepares to lead Bayern against HSV, who have recently returned to the Bundesliga, Kompany recalled a frustrating incident that convinced him it was time to move on.

The key takeaway is how a single management decision can significantly alter a player’s career path. For Kompany, being called back from a major international tournament only to be left on the bench was the turning point that led him to a legendary career at Manchester City.

🗓️ A Frustrating Recall from the Olympics

In the summer of 2008, Kompany was representing his country, Belgium, at the Olympic Games in China. He was excited to play in the semi-finals, a huge moment for his national team. However, his club at the time, HSV, recalled him to Germany for a Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich. Despite his disappointment, he returned as requested by the club.

✈️ The Moment He Decided to Leave

After travelling all the way back from China, Kompany was shocked when the HSV coach, Martin Jol, decided to put him on the bench for the entire game. “I was so angry,” Kompany remembered. “My country is playing in the semi-finals of the Olympics… And I’m not allowed to play.” He felt that a promise had been broken, and right after the match, he told his father he had decided to leave HSV. “I said: ‘In principle I’m leaving.’”

🏆 A Successful Move to Manchester City

Just a week after that incident, Kompany transferred to Manchester City for €10.5 million. It turned out to be a fantastic decision. He became the team’s captain under coach Pep Guardiola and led the club to four English Premier League titles, establishing himself as a club legend. Reflecting on the move, Kompany simply said, “I didn’t make a bad choice.”

🙏 Looking Back with Gratitude

Despite the unhappy ending, Kompany still feels grateful for his time at HSV. He acknowledged that it was a difficult period in his personal life, as his mother had passed away and his sister was ill, while he was also recovering from a serious Achilles tendon injury. “It wasn’t all easy personally,” he said. “Nevertheless, I made many friends. The connection will always remain.”
