Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has expressed concern over Nicolas Jackson’s challenging start at the club. The striker, who is on loan from Chelsea, has found it difficult to fit into the team’s system, scoring just two goals in his first 10 appearances.
Matthaus believes that while Jackson has potential, he currently looks out of place and disrupts the team’s smooth, fast-paced style of play. For Jackson to succeed, he needs more playing time to build confidence, but opportunities may become even more limited soon.
🤔 A Challenging Start in Germany
Nicolas Jackson joined Bayern on a season-long loan, with an option for a permanent move costing £56.2 million. However, his slow start has cast doubt on whether the German club will choose to make the transfer permanent. Under manager Vincent Kompany, the 24-year-old has mainly served as a backup for star striker Harry Kane, contributing two goals and one assist in 10 matches across all competitions.
🗣️ Matthaus Highlights a Lack of Flow
Speaking on a podcast, Lothar Matthaus pointed out that Jackson doesn’t seem to connect well with the team’s rhythm. “He gets little playing time and when he has played, he still seems a bit out of place,” Matthaus explained. He noted that while the ball moves smoothly between players like Olise, Kane, and Diaz, the flow “gets a little stuck” when Jackson is involved, suggesting his passing isn’t sharp enough yet.
⏳ The Need for More Game Time
Matthaus acknowledged that Jackson is a young player who had a good goal-scoring record at Chelsea. To regain his form and confidence, he needs consistent minutes on the field. “If he only ever comes on for a few minutes, it will be difficult for him to be confident,” he said. The situation could become tougher for Jackson, as the return of key player Jamal Musiala from injury will likely reduce his already limited playing opportunities.
✨ Potential and an Uncertain Future
Despite the criticism, Matthaus believes Jackson can still contribute with his “physical presence, his speed, and his finishing ability.” Bayern likely signed him recognizing these strengths. However, his future remains unclear. Jackson has a long-term contract with Chelsea until 2033, but his relationship with the English club and manager Enzo Maresca could be complicated, adding another layer of uncertainty to his career path.
