Helmer on Ten Hag's Sudden Leverkusen Exit

Former Germany defender Thomas Helmer has expressed his surprise over Bayer Leverkusen’s decision to let go of manager Erik ten Hag just a month into the new Bundesliga season. The move came after the club’s management reportedly had second thoughts about his appointment just a few weeks into pre-season.

In an interview, Helmer shared his thoughts on the unexpected dismissal and other recent team changes, suggesting that major issues may have been happening behind the scenes.

🤔 A Surprising Decision

Thomas Helmer found the timing of the decision to be “crazy,” noting that it was highly unusual to dismiss a manager after only a few competitive games. He pointed out that there must have been significant internal problems for the club to act so quickly. “Apparently they had no idea that the coach had no way of reaching the team,” Helmer said, suggesting a disconnect between Ten Hag and his players.

🤝 Team Chemistry Challenges

Helmer believes a key reason for the trouble was the major changes to the squad. With many important players leaving and new ones arriving, the team dynamic shifted significantly. According to Helmer, a coach’s main job is to bring everyone together. “As a coach, you always have to try to bring them all under one roof. Apparently he didn’t manage to do that,” he explained, highlighting Ten Hag’s struggle to unite the new team.

🇩🇰 A New Coach’s Task

Erik ten Hag has been replaced by former Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand. While Helmer feels Hjulmand makes a good impression, he acknowledges the new manager faces a difficult challenge. With many key players gone, Hjulmand must quickly figure out how to build a successful team from a completely new group. The main question, Helmer noted, is “how quickly he can create a successful team again.”

⚽ Xhaka’s Unexpected Move

Helmer also commented on Granit Xhaka’s transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Sunderland, a move he found equally surprising. He suggested that Xhaka’s decision was not just about the money. “You have to convince him,” Helmer said, praising Sunderland for successfully presenting their vision for the team and persuading the midfielder to join them.
