The 2025 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas has wrapped up, with the Hornets winning the championship. The event gave us our first look at the league’s newest rookie class. While some top draft picks showed why they were chosen, other players also made a strong impression.
Here’s a summary of the standout players and what their performances could mean for the upcoming NBA season.
🌟 Top Picks Show Their Potential
Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 pick, quickly showed his all-around talent with the Mavericks. In his first game, he struggled with shooting but still contributed with rebounds, assists, steals, and a block. He followed that with a huge 31-point game, proving he can score from anywhere. Flagg looks ready to play a major role for Dallas. Meanwhile, the No. 2 pick, Dylan Harper, also looked impressive for the Spurs despite being a bit rusty. In just two games, he showed strong defense and an ability to get to the basket. He will be an important part of San Antonio’s young team alongside Victor Wembanyama.
🔥 Versatile Guards and MVP Performance
Several guards and wings had memorable performances. V.J. Edgecombe of the 76ers displayed incredible athleticism on both offense and defense, with powerful dunks and key defensive plays. For the Hornets, Kon Knueppel overcame a slow start to win the Summer League MVP award. After a tough first game, he scored 16 or more points in his next four games, leading his team to the title with his smart plays and excellent shooting. Another standout was Tre Johnson of the Wizards, who proved too good for the Summer League by scoring 39 points in just two games. He showed off a wide range of scoring skills that suggest he could become a key offensive player for Washington in the future.
💪 Strong Showings from Forwards and Centers
The frontcourt players also made their mark. Ace Bailey, playing for the Jazz, showed great energy and scoring ability. After a quiet first game, he scored 18 points with impressive hustle plays and rebounding. Yang Hansen, a 7-foot-1 center from China, was a pleasant surprise for the Trail Blazers. He demonstrated strong shot-blocking skills and excellent passing for a big man, suggesting he could become a unique and versatile player. For the Hawks, Asa Newell showed off his athleticism and much-improved three-point shooting. His ability to rebound and score efficiently will make him a valuable player for Atlanta, especially when playing alongside a top passer like Trae Young.
