Pritchard Poised for Another Big Season with Celtics

After a breakout season, Payton Pritchard is ready to take on an even bigger role for the Celtics, especially with key players missing.
Pritchard Poised for Another Big Season with Celtics

Payton Pritchard’s Sixth Man of the Year award was a major highlight last season, but the hardworking guard is already focused on what’s next. With significant changes to the Boston Celtics’ lineup, including an indefinite injury to star player Jayson Tatum, Pritchard has a prime opportunity to elevate his game even further. He seems ready to build on his success and take another major step forward in his career.

🏆 A Mindset for More Success

Even after winning a prestigious award, Payton Pritchard didn’t spend much time celebrating. His focus quickly returned to the game, as the Celtics were in the middle of a playoff series. This reflects his personality—he is never easily satisfied. For him, the award was simply confirmation that his years of hard work were paying off, motivating him to keep pushing his limits. “It just shows that I feel like I’m on the right path,” Pritchard said. “That the hard work I put in and the grind and everything, that it’s paying off. So it just shows me that I’m going to continue to do what I’m going to do.”

📈 A Golden Opportunity in Boston

This offseason has brought big changes to the Celtics. With Jayson Tatum sidelined and several other key players having departed, the team will need others to step up. Jaylen Brown is expected to become the primary scoring option, and Derrick White will likely have the ball in his hands more often. Among all the players, however, Pritchard may be in the best position to make the biggest leap. Fresh off a career-best season, he has the momentum and skill to take on a much larger role and more responsibility on the court.

🔥 Proving He Can Deliver

Pritchard has already shown he can perform at a high level when the team is missing key players. In 10 games without Tatum last season, he averaged an impressive 19.0 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.0 rebounds. He also shot the ball efficiently, hitting 47.3% from the field. During that stretch, he scored 20 or more points four times, including two games where he scored over 30. One of his most memorable performances was a career-high 43 points against the Blazers, where he and Derrick White became the first Celtics teammates to each score 40 points in the same game.

🏀 Adapting to a New System

With Tatum out, the Celtics may adopt a faster playing style, a change that would benefit their roster of talented shooters. The team still has excellent perimeter players like Pritchard, Derrick White, newcomer Anfernee Simons, and Sam Hauser. While Simons will compete with Pritchard for minutes, there should be enough playing time for both, especially if the team uses smaller, quicker lineups. Pritchard also has the advantage of being a reliable defender, which has earned him the long-standing trust of head coach Joe Mazzulla. His role is expected to expand significantly, as his usage rate and three-point attempts increased sharply last season whenever Tatum was off the court.
