Olivier Rioux Makes Historic College Basketball Debut

The crowd went wild as 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux, the world’s tallest teenager, made history by playing in his first college basketball game. His team, the Florida Gators, secured a big 104-64 win over North Florida, and the highlight for many fans was seeing “Ollie” finally get his chance on the court.

Rioux’s debut was a carefully planned moment, happening late in a game that was already won. This shows his coach’s strategy of easing him into college-level competition while rewarding his hard work and patience. Although he didn’t touch the ball, his presence alone created a buzz and showed the strong support he has from fans and teammates.

🏀 A Moment Fans Were Waiting For

With just over two minutes left in the game and his team holding a comfortable lead, chants of “We Want Ollie” filled the stadium. Coach Todd Golden listened to the fans and sent Olivier Rioux onto the floor, officially making him the tallest person to ever play college basketball. “It felt great,” Rioux said afterward. “The support from everybody was amazing… I’m very grateful.”

💪 A Year of Hard Work and Patience

This special moment was the result of a year of dedicated effort. Last season, Rioux chose to be a “redshirt,” meaning he focused on training and developing his skills with the team instead of playing in games. His coach praised his positive attitude and commitment, saying, “He’s put in a lot of great work. To his credit, he’s kept a great attitude without getting a lot of reward in terms of playing time.”

📏 Taller Than NBA Legends

To understand just how tall Rioux is, he stands 2 inches (5 cm) taller than former NBA giants Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol. He is also 3 inches taller than other famous big men like Yao Ming and Tacko Fall. As a 19-year-old from Canada, he is already a well-known figure on his university campus, often seen ducking under doorways.

🤔 The Path Ahead

Coach Golden has been clear that Rioux’s opportunities to play will likely come in games where the team has a large lead. Despite this, Rioux is committed to the team and continues to challenge himself by practicing against Florida’s other talented frontcourt players. His debut was a rewarding experience and a neat first step in his college basketball journey.
