Big Thought, a Dallas-based organization, has teamed up with the NBA Foundation to help young people learn and grow outside of school. For nearly 40 years, they have used creative programs to build confidence and prepare youth for future success.
This partnership shows the importance of supporting local organizations that offer practical skills and mentorship. By focusing on creativity, Big Thought helps young people develop in areas like critical thinking and emotional well-being, which are essential for navigating life.
🎨 Using Creativity to Build Futures
Big Thought believes that creativity is a powerful tool. For almost 40 years, this Dallas-Fort Worth organization has been helping young people build skills for life through creative activities. Their programs, which include after-school and summer initiatives, are designed to inspire confidence and curiosity. “We believe that when you build the creative muscle in young people, it can really change their trajectory of life, work, and school,” says President and CEO Erin Offord. With help from the NBA Foundation, Big Thought ensures students are engaged and ready to succeed.
📚 Programs for All Ages
Big Thought offers programs for everyone from children aged four to young adults aged 24. Their activities are tailored to support young people through different stages of life. For example, the “Thriving Minds After School” program combines homework help with arts and crafts, while “Dallas City of Learning” helps prevent students from forgetting what they’ve learned over the summer. These programs focus on five key areas: social-emotional learning, critical thinking, digital skills, the arts, and community involvement. This approach helps students develop the confidence to handle school, work, and life.
🤝 Giving Second Chances and Working Together
A key part of Big Thought’s work is making sure one mistake doesn’t ruin a young person’s future. Their “Creative Solutions” program has been running for over 30 years, working with the youth justice system to offer a new path through art, mentorship, and support. The organization also knows that collaboration is essential. They partner with over 300 community groups to bring creative programs and mentors to neighborhoods that need them most, creating more opportunities for success.
📣 Putting Young People First
Big Thought strongly believes in listening to young people and involving them in the planning process. The organization has made an effort to co-design programs with the youth they serve. Today, former and current participants are part of Big Thought’s board of directors. Through the Community Action Team, young people lead projects to address issues in their own neighborhoods. “We wanted to take the extra step of not just listening to young people, but really working alongside them in designing and leading the way,” says Offord.
