The Dallas Mavericks have announced a major leadership change, parting ways with General Manager Nico Harrison after a controversial trade and a slow start to the season.
Mavericks Part Ways With GM Nico Harrison

The Dallas Mavericks announced a significant change in their front office on Tuesday, as the team has parted ways with General Manager Nico Harrison after just over four seasons. This move comes after a challenging start to the season and follows the major trade last year that sent superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Harrison’s time with the Mavericks was marked by both high points, including a trip to the NBA Finals, and a recent period of struggle. The decision to trade the fan-favourite Dončić for Anthony Davis proved to be a turning point, creating tension with the fanbase and failing to produce immediate results on the court, ultimately leading to this leadership change. Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi will take over as interim general managers while the team searches for a permanent replacement.

🔄 The Trade That Changed Everything

The defining moment of Harrison’s tenure was undoubtedly the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. While Harrison believed the move was necessary to build a championship-contending team, he later admitted that he underestimated how much the fans loved Dončić. The trade’s aftermath has been difficult. The team has started this season with a 3-8 record, and Davis has been sidelined with injuries for six of the first 11 games. This rough start, combined with fan disappointment, created a lot of pressure on the front office.

📈 A Tenure of Highs and Lows

Before the controversial trade, Nico Harrison’s leadership saw the Mavericks achieve significant success. Hired in 2021 alongside coach Jason Kidd, he helped guide the team to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and an NBA Finals appearance in 2024. Harrison was known for making bold moves, such as trading Kristaps Porziņģis for Spencer Dinwiddie and later acquiring Kyrie Irving. These trades played key roles in the team’s deep playoff runs, showcasing his ability to build a competitive roster around his star players at the time.

➡️ A New Direction for the Mavericks

With Harrison’s departure, team governor Patrick Dumont has tasked Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi with leading basketball operations in the short term. The organization has already begun a search for a new general manager to shape its future. This change comes after a recent shift in team ownership, where the Dumont and Adelson families took control from Mark Cuban. While Cuban initially disagreed with the Dončić trade, the new ownership group, led by Dumont, now has full control over basketball decisions and is looking to steer the team in a new direction.
