The Los Angeles Lakers have officially welcomed veteran guard Marcus Smart to their team. After reaching a buyout agreement with the Washington Wizards, Smart signed a two-year, $11 million deal to join a star-studded roster featuring LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
This move addresses a key need for the Lakers, who were looking for a strong perimeter defender. While not known for high-scoring, Smart’s defensive skills and experience are expected to complement the team’s offensive stars, providing balance on the court.
🛡️ A Proven Defensive Force
Smart is widely recognized for his tough defense. His career highlight is winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022 while with the Boston Celtics. During his nine seasons in Boston, he helped the team reach the playoffs every year, including an NBA Finals appearance, and was named to the All-Defensive First Team three times.
💪 A Chance for a Fresh Start
In recent years, injuries have limited Smart’s time on the court. He played in only 54 games over the past two seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards. Now healthy, joining a championship contender like the Lakers gives him a great opportunity to play a significant role and make a strong comeback.
🧱 Building a Contender
Smart is one of several key offseason additions for the Lakers. The team also brought in center Deandre Ayton and forward Jake LaRavia. These new players are set to fill the gap left by Dorian Finney-Smith, who joined the Houston Rockets. By adding these pieces and re-signing backup center Jaxson Hayes, the Lakers are working to build a deeper, more balanced roster around their core superstars.
