Lynx Coach Cheryl Reeve Suspended for One Playoff Game

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve has been suspended for one game after being ejected during a tense playoff match against the Phoenix Mercury. The suspension comes after Reeve strongly criticised the referees both on the court and in her comments after the game, which the Lynx lost 84-76.

📜 ## Why the Suspension Happened The WNBA announced that Reeve was suspended for several reasons. According to the league, her actions included aggressively arguing with a game official, not leaving the court promptly after her ejection, and making inappropriate remarks during her post-game press conference. This is believed to be the first time a coach has been suspended for a WNBA playoff game.

🏀 ## The Play That Sparked the Outburst The incident was triggered by a no-call late in the fourth quarter. Mercury player Alyssa Thomas stole the ball from the Lynx’s Napheesa Collier, leading to a game-sealing layup. Collier was injured on the play and had to be helped off the court. While Reeve was furious that no foul was called, the National Basketball Referees Association later posted on social media that the officials made the correct decision, stating the contact was incidental after a legal steal.

🗣️ ## Broader Concerns About Officiating Reeve’s frustration highlights a wider conversation this season about the league’s officiating. She called for changes at the league level to improve the quality of refereeing in important games. Other coaches, such as Becky Hammon of the Las Vegas Aces, have also expressed concerns about the level of physical contact being allowed in the playoffs, suggesting that the rules on freedom of movement are not being enforced consistently.

➡️ ## What This Means for the Lynx Reeve will serve her suspension during the crucial Game 4 of the semifinals series against the Mercury, where the Lynx are currently trailing 2-1. In addition to her suspension and fine, two of her assistant coaches, Eric Thibault and Rebekkah Brunson, were also fined by the league for their interactions with officials and for comments made on social media.
