Lakers fans, the wait is over! Superstar guard Luka Dončić is set to play his first preseason game this Tuesday against the Phoenix Suns. This will be the first time fans get to see the 26-year-old in action for the Lakers this season. Adding to the excitement, fellow guard Marcus Smart will also be making his debut in the same game.
⭐ A Well-Deserved Rest
Luka Dončić has been resting during the initial part of the preseason, and for a good reason. He had a busy summer playing for the Slovenian national team in the EuroBasket tournament. The Lakers organization decided it was important for him to fully recover before the start of the regular season, ensuring he is fresh and ready to perform at his best.
📈 A Gradual Return to Action
Coach JJ Redick explained that the team will be careful with Dončić’s return. He plans to gradually increase his playing time, or “ramp-up” his minutes, from the first game to the next. “What that total number looks like, we’re still talking to Javy [Barrio, Dončić’s athletic trainer] and Luka about what kind of makes sense,” Redick said, showing a thoughtful approach to managing the star player’s health.
🏀 Building the Best Lineups
With both Dončić and Marcus Smart returning, Coach Redick shared some of his strategy for the upcoming season. He emphasized the importance of balance in every lineup. “You want to put your five best players on the court as much as possible,” he noted. The coaching staff considers key factors like defense, playmaking, and shooting ability when putting together different player combinations, aiming to create the most effective lineups for any situation.
