Lillard Takes on GM Role at Weber State

NBA star Damian Lillard is taking on a new challenge by returning to his former university, Weber State, as the basketball team’s new general manager. The announcement was made during the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic, an event Lillard himself hosted in Ogden, Utah.

This new role comes just two weeks after Lillard, a veteran player, agreed to a new three-year contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. His decision to become a GM while still actively playing in the NBA shows his deep commitment to the university that helped launch his successful career.

🤝 A Return to His Roots

Lillard has a special history with Weber State. He played for the university’s team, the Wildcats, from 2008 to 2012. During his time there, he was a standout player, earning the title of Big Sky Player of the Year twice. His incredible college performance set the stage for his journey to becoming one of the top players in the NBA.

🏀 A New Challenge Off the Court

While his focus remains on playing for the Trail Blazers, Lillard is excited to contribute to Weber State from a management perspective. As general manager, he will be involved in the team’s operations and development. This dual role is unique for an active NBA player and highlights his dedication to giving back to the community that supported him.

💬 Passion for Player Development

Lillard explained that his strong relationship with the program and its coach, Eric Duft, was a key reason for taking the job. “I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful,” Lillard said. He also expressed a passion for helping student-athletes grow their careers beyond college, using his own experience to guide them.
