Knicks Start Strong with Season-Opening Win Over Cavaliers

In an exciting season opener at Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks started their 2025-26 campaign with a convincing 119-111 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. This win marks a significant turnaround from last season, where the Cavaliers dominated the series. The Knicks controlled the game for most of the night. Even when the Cavaliers briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter, New York responded decisively with a 14-0 run to secure the win.

Overall, the game highlighted two teams at different stages of finding their rhythm. The Knicks, under a new coach, looked energized and cohesive, while the shorthanded Cavaliers struggled to build consistent momentum on offense. New York’s ability to create better scoring opportunities and control the pace was the key difference in their first win of the season.

🏀 Knicks Showcase a Faster, More Balanced Attack

Under new head coach Mike Brown, the Knicks’ offense looked noticeably different—and better. They played with a faster pace and more ball movement, creating easier shots for everyone. A great example was the team’s first possession, which ended with a wide-open three-pointer for Jalen Brunson after several players touched the ball. Even though Brunson didn’t have his best shooting night (5-for-18), he still scored 23 points, mostly from the free-throw line. Importantly, he didn’t have to do everything himself. Five Knicks players scored between 15 and 24 points, showing a more balanced team effort.

🤔 Cavaliers’ Offense Struggles to Find Its Rhythm

The Cavaliers had a tough time getting their offense going. Many of their possessions ended in difficult shots because they couldn’t create clear advantages against the Knicks’ defense. Part of the problem was the absence of three key players, and the team is still learning to play together early in the season. While Donovan Mitchell managed to score by making some tough shots, the team generally struggled to generate easy looks. The Knicks’ defense deserves credit for being organized and forcing Cleveland into uncomfortable situations throughout the game.

⭐ Evan Mobley Takes on a Bigger Role

With several key players out, Evan Mobley was given more responsibility on offense. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year showed both promise and areas for growth. At times, he made confident moves, like a turnaround jumper early in the game. In other moments, he forced difficult shots or got stuck in traffic. Mobley also showed his range by making four three-pointers. He is clearly still adjusting to his expanded role, but his willingness to be aggressive is a positive sign for the Cavaliers as they wait for their full roster to return.

✨ Young Players Get a Chance to Shine

Both teams were missing important players, which meant younger and less experienced members had to step up. For Cleveland, Jalen Tyson started the game, while rookie Tyrese Proctor also played significant minutes. For New York, Ariel Hukporti was in the starting lineup, and coach Mike Brown used 11 different players, showing trust in his team’s depth. While these lineups might not be what we see in the playoffs, it was a valuable opportunity for new faces to gain experience and prove they can contribute when their number is called.
