During the annual players’ meeting in Las Vegas, Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet was chosen as the new President of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). He takes over from CJ McCollum and will serve a four-year term, beginning immediately. This election marks a new chapter for the union that represents all NBA players.
⭐ A Leader On and Off the Court
VanVleet’s journey to this leadership role is an inspiring one. After going undrafted in 2016, he worked his way up from the G League to become an essential player for the 2019 NBA Champion Toronto Raptors and was later named an NBA All-Star in 2022. Outside of basketball, he is dedicated to helping communities through his foundation, which supports young people with education and sports programs. As a father of three, he is a role model both in his career and personal life.
🤝 A Commitment to Fellow Players
In his new position, VanVleet will represent the interests of all NBA players. He expressed his excitement and dedication, saying, “It’s truly an honor to be elected as President of the NBPA by my peers and I look forward to continuing to advocate for the best interest of all the members.” He aims to use his own experiences to understand the challenges players face and to lead with passion and respect.
🙏 Building on a Strong Foundation
VanVleet will be guided in his new role by the outgoing president, CJ McCollum, who served on the NBPA’s leadership committee for seven years. McCollum played a key part in major decisions, including helping the league return to play during the 2020 NBA Restart. He also successfully led negotiations for the 2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement, which improved benefits and created new investment opportunities for players.
