The Dallas Mavericks are making moves, and this one has echoes of a championship past! Following a turbulent season that saw Frank Vogel’s tenure with the Phoenix Suns end in a first-round sweep, sources report he’s set to join Jason Kidd’s coaching staff in Dallas. This marks a reunion for the duo, who previously led the Los Angeles Lakers to an NBA title in 2020.
Vogel will serve as an associate head coach, a reversal of roles from their time in the “bubble” where Kidd was Vogel’s assistant. Both coaches, now 52, bring a wealth of experience to the Mavericks. Kidd replaced Rick Carlisle as coach of the Mavericks in 2021-22 after spending one more season with Vogel in LA.
Kidd initially joined Vogel’s staff in LA after being fired in Milwaukee. His head coaching career began in Brooklyn in 2013-14, immediately after retiring as a player. After being fired from the Lakers, Vogel spent only one season with Phoenix in 2023-24, getting fired after the Suns were swept in the first round of the playoffs.
Will this reunited partnership bring a fresh perspective and renewed success to Dallas? Or will differing coaching philosophies create friction on the sidelines? Only time will tell.
