The EuroBasket 2025 group stage wrapped up with a series of thrilling and unexpected results as teams battled for a place in the knockout rounds. The day saw a remarkable upset, a clutch performance to secure qualification, and plenty of individual brilliance. From Britain breaking a long losing streak to Portugal fighting hard despite a key player’s ejection, the final day was packed with high stakes and memorable moments, setting the stage for an exciting knockout phase.
🇬🇧 Britain’s Historic Upset Over Montenegro
In a surprising turn of events, Britain secured their first EuroBasket victory in 12 years with an impressive 89-83 upset against Montenegro. This loss unfortunately ended Montenegro’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage. Despite a heroic effort from Bulls star Nikola Vučević, who posted an outstanding 31 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, his team couldn’t overcome their 18 turnovers. Britain’s win was a collective effort, led by Myles Hesson’s 25 points and seven rebounds, along with Akwasi Yeboah’s 23 points. As Vučević noted, Britain “did more to win” with their aggressive play.
🇵🇹 Portugal Secures Knockout Spot Amidst Drama
Portugal delivered a crucial 68-65 win over Estonia, successfully qualifying from Group A. This victory came with its own share of drama, as Celtics center Neemias Queta was ejected in the third quarter after receiving two technical fouls. Queta had already contributed 15 points before his early exit. Estonia held a narrow 64-61 lead in the final minute, but Rafael Lisboa stepped up for Portugal, tying the game with a clutch 3-pointer with 54 seconds left. Lisboa then sealed the win by adding four free throws, finishing with 17 points and five assists, embodying the team’s “never give up” spirit.
🏆 Group Stage Outcomes and Knockout Bound Teams
Following these intense matchups, both Montenegro and Britain were eliminated from the tournament. Britain’s win had a ripple effect, allowing Sweden to advance to the knockout phase for the first time, despite their 74-71 loss to Lithuania. From Group B, Germany, Lithuania, and Finland also secured their spots in the Round of 16. In Group A, host nation Latvia delighted their home crowd, including President Edgars Rinkēvičs, with a dominant 109-75 win over the Czech Republic. Brothers Davis and Dairis Bertans each scored 20 points, while Hawks center Kristaps Porziņģis added 16 points and seven rebounds. Latvia had already qualified and finished third in their group. The knockout phase, featuring the top four teams from each group, is set to begin on Saturday in Riga, Latvia.
