The Cleveland Cavaliers are getting ready for the new season, but their All-Star point guard, Darius Garland, will be taking things slowly. After a persistent toe injury hampered his performance in last season’s playoffs, Garland is now on a recovery path and will have a limited role in the team’s training camp.
His gradual return means the Cavaliers will likely need to adjust their strategy for the start of the season. Garland is expected to miss at least the first month, prompting the team to explore other options in their backcourt to maintain their competitive edge.
👟 A Cautious Return to the Court
Darius Garland underwent surgery on his big toe back in June to fix an issue that affected him during the playoffs. Last season, the Cavaliers had an excellent run in the Eastern Conference but were eventually eliminated by the Pacers. The team is now being careful with Garland’s recovery, limiting his basketball activities to ensure he returns to full strength without any setbacks.
💪 Building Strength and a Positive Mindset
According to Koby Altman, the Cavaliers’ president of basketball operations, Garland has had a very productive offseason. “He focused on… weight room strength. He looks good. He’s stronger, more stout and has a great attitude,” Altman said. While his physical strength has improved, the team acknowledges that rebuilding his on-court conditioning will take time. “That’s not something that can happen in two weeks,” Altman added.
🏀 How the Cavaliers Will Adapt
With Garland sidelined, the Cavaliers have a few options to fill the point guard position. Donovan Mitchell may shift to the point guard role, with Sam Merrill potentially starting as the shooting guard. The team also brought in Lonzo Ball from the Bulls during the offseason. Coach Kenny Atkinson is optimistic about Ball’s contribution, stating, “With this guy, he hits what we do to a tee. He will add a lot.” Ball could see significant playing time early in the season as the team manages Garland’s absence.
