Cam Johnson Finds Strength in Family on New Team

New Nuggets forward Cam Johnson leans on family wisdom as he adjusts to his new role with the team.
Cam Johnson Finds Strength in Family on New Team

Cam Johnson, the newest starting forward for the Denver Nuggets, is working hard to find his place with the championship-contending team. After being traded from Brooklyn in June, Johnson has been adjusting to a new city, a new system, and a new set of expectations. While his preseason performance showed moments of uncertainty, Johnson is leaning on the strong support of his family and the timeless wisdom passed down from his late grandmother to guide him through this transition.

The main challenge for Johnson isn’t his skill, but rather building chemistry and finding his natural rhythm with established stars like Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon. He admits to feeling unsettled as he learns his teammates’ tendencies and the team’s style of play. However, the Nuggets coaching staff and players are not concerned. They have full confidence in Johnson’s abilities and understand that it takes time for a new player to feel completely comfortable in a well-established system.

🤔 A Challenging Start in a New City

When the Nuggets acquired Cam Johnson, they saw him as a key piece to elevate their offense with his excellent shooting and ballhandling skills. But for Johnson, moving to a new team has felt like starting over. He has been more concerned with his “feel” for the game than his statistics, focusing on understanding where his teammates like to receive the ball and how he can best fit into their fluid style of play. “When you go to a new spot, you almost feel like you are restarting, and there can be frustration in that,” Johnson explained. “I feel like I’m at my best when I find my groove, and I’m in my comfort.” A moment during a preseason game, where a pass to Nikola Jokić resulted in a turnover, highlighted the small adjustments he is still making. Johnson is working through the challenge of thinking too much on the court instead of playing freely.

🙏 Guided by Family Wisdom

Through this period of adjustment, Johnson’s greatest source of strength is his family. He talks to his father, Gil, on the phone every single day. These conversations are often filled with lessons and encouragement rooted in the wisdom of his late grandmother, Helen Johnson, whom the family called “Mama Helen.” She passed away last August, but her influence remains strong. Mama Helen raised her family with lessons of determination, faith, and humility—values that Gil passed on to his own sons. As Johnson navigates his new life in Denver, he recognizes his grandmother’s teachings in his father’s advice: Honor God, work hard, and be humble. These principles provide him with comfort and a clear perspective during this challenging time.

💪 The Importance of Resilience

One of the most important lessons in the Johnson household was resilience. Cam recalls that this topic came up often during their non-negotiable Sunday family dinners. “No matter what life deals you, no matter how many times you fail, go back at that task with the same, if not more, resilience,” his father would say, echoing the spirit of Mama Helen. Johnson carries this lesson with him every day. Before each game, he follows a special ritual passed down from his grandmother: reciting Psalm 23 during the national anthem. “It’s basically saying don’t have fear in your circumstance and to understand you are covered in grace,” Johnson shared. This ritual not only prepares him for the game but also keeps him connected to the strength and wisdom of his family.

🤝 A Supportive Team Environment

While Johnson works on finding his rhythm, his new teammates and coaches have been nothing but supportive. Coach David Adelman praised Johnson’s basketball IQ and is excited about the new offensive possibilities he brings to the team. Adelman also noted that blending in with a core group that has played together for years, like Jokić, Murray, and Gordon, naturally takes time. Johnson’s teammates share this view. “He’s fitting right in,” said Murray. “You want to play with guys like him.” Aaron Gordon added, “Cam is such a great player that all he has to do is be himself, and it will all work out.” The team has given Johnson significant playing time during the preseason to help speed up the process of building chemistry, showing their commitment to helping him succeed.

🏡 Making Denver Feel Like Home

Off the court, Johnson is also focused on settling into his new surroundings. As a self-described homebody, creating a comfortable living space is important for his peace of mind. He has already set up a reading corner and a space for yoga and recovery in his new apartment. He’s looking forward to his dog, Halo, joining him soon, as her presence always makes a place feel like home. Johnson sees a parallel between unpacking boxes at home and finding his role on the court—both are processes that require patience. He tries to keep a light mindset, guided by his grandmother’s old sayings about not wanting more than you need. With each practice and every game, he gets one step closer to feeling fully at home with the Nuggets.
