The Denver Nuggets have reportedly traded Michael Porter Jr. and an unprotected 2032 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for forward Cameron Johnson. This move signifies a significant shift as the Nuggets attempt to re-tool their roster around three-time Kia MVP Nikola Jokić.
Nuggets receive: Cameron Johnson Nets receive: Michael Porter Jr., Unprotected 2032 First-Round Pick
This surprising decision comes after the Nuggets’ struggles to maintain depth following their 2023 championship run. The departures of key role players like Bruce Brown, Jeff Green, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in free agency have left Denver searching for answers.
Michael Porter Jr., the 15th overall pick in the 2018 Draft, had a career year last season, averaging 18.2 points on impressive shooting splits (50.4% overall, 39.5% from 3-point range). However, his departure highlights the team’s willingness to make bold moves.
Cameron Johnson, also coming off a career year (18.8 ppg, 39% from 3-pointers), offers a more cost-effective option for the Nuggets in the frontcourt. The Nets acquired Johnson in the Kevin Durant trade with the Suns and had been rumored to be shopping him to contenders. This trade also comes after the Nets dealt Mikal Bridges, Johnson’s close friend, to the Knicks for a package including five first-round picks.
Porter’s draft stock had slipped due to a back injury, causing him to fall to Denver at No. 14 in 2018. He missed his entire first season due to a back procedure. Now, he gets a fresh start in Brooklyn.
