A Guide to Yahoo's New 'High Score' Fantasy NBA

For the 2025-26 NBA season, Yahoo Fantasy Basketball has introduced a fresh and exciting way to play called ‘High Score.’ This new default format simplifies the entire experience, making it easier for both new and experienced managers to enjoy the game. It’s designed to be less of a daily grind and more about celebrating your players’ biggest performances, bringing a new level of fun to fantasy basketball.

High Score is a points-based, head-to-head format that gets straight to the action. It’s built for fans who love the NBA but may not have time to track every game and injury report. The goal is to provide a modern fantasy experience that is easy to follow, yet still offers plenty of strategy and competition.

🎮 A New Way to Play

High Score makes fantasy basketball more accessible. While traditional formats that require intense daily management are still available, High Score offers a more streamlined approach. This format is perfect for those who want to stay engaged with the season-long competition without feeling overwhelmed. It adapts to the fast-paced nature of today’s NBA, focusing on what makes the game exciting: star players having incredible nights.

📊 Simplified Rosters and Scoring

To make things easier, High Score features smaller rosters. Instead of managing 13 or more players, your team will consist of just 10 players, with six starters each week. The roster structure is also more flexible, using a mix of guards, forwards, and one FLEX position, similar to how the NBA selects its All-Star and awards teams. Scoring is also simplified, focusing only on core stats: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. Turnovers are no longer counted, and all stats are scored in simple whole numbers, making it easy to see who is winning at a glance.

🗓️ Weekly Lineups, Maximum Points

One of the biggest changes is how you manage your lineup. With High Score, you only need to set your starting lineup once per week. The system then automatically finds each starter’s single best game from that week and adds those points to your team’s total score. This means you don’t have to guess which night a player will perform best. You can relax and enjoy the games, knowing that your players’ standout performances will always count toward your weekly total.

🔄 Smart Player Swaps

While lineups are set weekly, you can still make changes during the week. However, there’s an important strategic rule to remember. If you move a player from your starting lineup to the bench, any points they have already scored that week will be erased. Only the points they score after you move them back into the starting lineup will count. For example, if Stephen Curry scores 35 fantasy points on Monday and you bench him afterward, those 35 points will not count. This makes timing your lineup decisions a key part of the strategy.
