FIBA has introduced two important new initiatives, the Safeguarding Toolkit and the Safeguarding Excellence Course, to ensure basketball is played in a safe and supportive environment for everyone. This move shows FIBA’s strong commitment to protecting participants and setting high safety standards across the global sports community. These free resources are designed to empower basketball organizations of all sizes to build a safer culture.
🏀 What Are the New Initiatives?
FIBA has launched two major projects to enhance safety in the sport: the Safeguarding Toolkit and the Safeguarding Excellence Course. These are part of FIBA’s goal to support its member federations. The aim is to strengthen protective measures in basketball and create a more secure environment for all players, coaches, and staff.
📚 A Practical Toolkit for Organizations
The FIBA Safeguarding Toolkit is a practical guide that helps basketball organizations build strong safety frameworks. It offers clear instructions on how to create policies, raise awareness about safety, prevent harm, and handle any incidents properly. This comprehensive resource is available in English, French, and Spanish, making it accessible to a wide audience.
🎓 Free Online Course to Train Safety Experts
FIBA is also offering a free online course called the Safeguarding Excellence Course. It is designed to train individuals to become the main contact person for safety matters, known as a Safeguarding Single Point of Contact (SPOC), within their organization. The course covers key topics like identifying and reporting concerns, creating safe environments, and developing safety plans. It is open to everyone in the basketball community and beyond.
🤝 A Global Commitment to Player Welfare
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis highlighted the importance of these programs, stating that more courses for players and coaches are planned. “By making them free and accessible to all, we demonstrate FIBA’s unwavering commitment to safety,” he said. HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, Chair of the FIBA Safeguarding Council, also praised the initiative as “safeguarding leadership in action,” thanking the council for their contributions to these important milestones.
