Italian basketball player Achille Polonara has shared some wonderful news with his fans: his recent bone marrow transplant was a success. From his hospital bed in Bologna, the 33-year-old forward posted an update on social media, confirming that “everything is fine with the transplant.” This marks a major positive step in his treatment for myeloid leukemia, which he was diagnosed with in June.
💪 A Journey of Resilience
This is not the first health challenge Polonara has faced with great courage. He previously battled testicular cancer, making a remarkable return to the basketball court midway through the 2023-24 season after completing his treatment. His determination to overcome these serious health issues has been an inspiration to many in the sports community.
🏀 Looking Ahead to a Comeback
Polonara is now focused on his recovery and hopes to get medically cleared to play again. He is set to make his next comeback with the Italian club Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari. With this team, he will compete in Italy’s top domestic league, LBA UnipolSai, and the FIBA Europe Cup. This will be his second time playing for Sassari, where he previously won a Europe Cup title between 2017 and 2019.
🌟 An Experienced International Player
Throughout his career, Polonara has been a key player for several top European clubs, including Virtus Segafredo Bologna, Baskonia, Fenerbahce, and Zalgiris. With 179 EuroLeague appearances, he is a seasoned veteran of Europe’s premier basketball competition. He has also been a regular member of Italy’s senior national team, representing his country in major international tournaments like the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
