Crvena Zvezda has had a difficult start to the 2025-26 season, losing its first three games across the EuroLeague and the regional ABA League. Head coach Giannis Sfairopoulos recently shared his thoughts on the team’s performance and the challenges they face, particularly with numerous player injuries.
😥 Acknowledging the Problem
Coach Sfairopoulos was open about the team’s struggles following a recent loss to Zadar. “Obviously, we have a problem and, obviously, we are not playing at our level, defensively and offensively,” he said. He pointed to the growing list of injuries as a significant issue but was clear that it is the reality the team must deal with, not an excuse for their performance.
🙏 A Message to the Fans
The coach also addressed the fans, who expressed their disappointment by booing the team. He showed understanding, noting that he expected it. “I know our fans are not satisfied,” he explained. “When the people are not satisfied, they can boo.” However, he called for unity and support during this tough time, offering a heartfelt comparison: “If you love your kid, you don’t hit him when he has a problem, you hug him.”
🏥 Injury Crisis Hits Hard
The team’s challenges are made worse by a long list of unavailable players. Key figures like Joel Bolomboy, Isaiah Canaan, and Ognjen Dobric are on the injury list. Additionally, Nikola Kalinic was out due to a suspension, and new signing Donatas Motiejunas could not play because his paperwork had not been finalized. The situation forced players like Codi Miller-McIntyre and Chima Moneke to play despite not being fully fit. Looking ahead, Zvezda faces another tough test as they travel to play defending champions Fenerbahce.
