Shane Larkin on Forging His Own Legacy in Basketball

Anadolu Efes star Shane Larkin has become a major name in European basketball, recently helping the Turkish national team win a silver medal at the 2025 EuroBasket. He recently opened up about his journey, explaining his decision to pursue basketball instead of following in the footsteps of his famous father, Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin.

Larkin’s story is one of determination and the desire to create his own identity. He consciously chose a more difficult road to ensure his success was entirely his own, driven by hard work rather than his family name. This mindset has defined his career and continues to fuel his performance on the court with both Efes and the Turkish national team.

🏀 Choosing a Different Path

Shane Larkin shared that playing baseball, his father’s sport, might have been an easier option. With his father’s legendary status, he likely would have received special treatment and more opportunities, even if he wasn’t a top player. “The route would’ve been easier because of all the relationships and the things that my dad had,” he noted.

💪 A Drive to Earn Every Achievement

Despite the easier path available, Larkin was determined to forge his own legacy. He wanted to prove himself in a different arena where his success would be based solely on his own merit. “I wanted to make my own name. I didn’t want to take the easy path. I wanted to work for it. I wanted to earn it,” he explained. This desire to earn everything is a core part of his motivation and continues to drive him every day.

🏆 Pride in a Self-Made Journey

Looking back, Larkin is proud of what he has built. “Sitting here today, I guess I can say that nothing that I’ve accomplished in this sport has been given to me,” he said. While he is proud of earning his success, he is also quick to acknowledge the people who supported him along the way, including his teammates, coaches, and family. Their support was crucial, but his motivation came from within, pushing him to become the best player he can be.
