Sarajevo Fans Protest Upcoming EuroLeague Game

A EuroLeague regular season game scheduled to be held in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, has drawn attention for reasons beyond the basketball court. The matchup between Dubai and Hapoel Tel Aviv is facing calls for cancellation from some local fans.

🗣️ Local Opposition to the Game

The main reason for the protest is the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In Sarajevo, a banner with the message “Cancel The Game” was displayed on a bridge near a major government building, showing clear opposition from a segment of the local community. This has put a spotlight on the decision to host the game in the city.

🌍 Why Sarajevo Was Chosen as a Neutral Venue

For safety reasons, Israeli basketball teams have recently been playing their designated “home” games in neutral locations. Hapoel Tel Aviv, for instance, has played several games in Sofia, Bulgaria. The upcoming game against the Dubai team in Sarajevo’s Zetra Arena was arranged as part of this measure. While the Dubai team usually plays its home games at the Coca-Cola Arena, this specific fixture was also relocated.

🏀 A Look at the Teams’ Standings

On the court, both teams are in the middle of their EuroLeague campaigns. Before this round, the Dubai team holds a record of 3 wins and 5 losses, placing them just outside the qualification spots for the Play-In tournament. In contrast, Hapoel Tel Aviv has started the season strongly with a 6-2 record, sharing the top of the league standings with teams like Zalgiris and Crvena Zvezda. With many games still to play, the standings could change significantly.
